A man who says he was a victim of sexual abuse when he was 12 in the 1970s was at a Los Angeles music festival when he noticed his father dancing in the middle of the dance floor.
“I was sitting in the front row with my mom, and I was watching him dance,” said Tom Gower, now 67, who has spent more than a decade raising awareness for sexual abuse in the entertainment industry.
“I noticed his fingers moving and thought it was weird.
And I didn’t know what to do.”
He went to the concert director, who called police, who told him to call the police and he went to talk to his father.
In the end, the father admitted to having a sexual relationship with the teenage Gower.
The elder Gower was arrested and charged with sexual assault.
Gower has been active in the Hollywood community, hosting weekly music videos for his YouTube channel, and performing at music festivals.
Gower says he doesn’t know why his father would want to take advantage of the teen, but he believes he was abused by his father during the time he was underage.
He said he felt bad for the family and he said he still suffers from the shame and guilt of the abuse.
I was never able to see what it was like to be abused as a child, he said.
“The thought of him going to jail and being taken to prison and having to testify about it made me angry.”
Gowles parents divorce was annulled in 1990, but Gower said he continues to have nightmares about the incident.
When I was 12 years old, my father abused me, he told me.
He beat me and took me to a dance floor, Gower says.
Then I was raped, he added.
And he told my mom to tell my mom I didn`t want to see her.
She said she couldn`t, he says.
“That`s why I started this thing.”
