In the process, the trio of artists and the management company behind the operation are opening a whole new space to host a slew of artists, including Kendrick Lamar, the Black Eyed Peas, and R. Kelly.
The trio has been putting on a variety of shows around the city over the last two years, including a summer concert at The Marquee at the Texas Theatre on Sept. 11.
“We’ve been touring with them, and now they’re playing in our new room,” said Davey Johnson, the head of Austin’s first music industry-run music venue, the Austin Music Room.
Austin’s music industry was established in 1891.
It has become a major hub for hip-hop, hip-rock, alternative rock, country, and other genres of music, but the venue has also been home to hip-hoppers such as T-Pain, Wiz Khalifa, and Lil Yachty.
As an Austin music venue with more than 1,200 rooms, the venue’s ability to host such a diverse range of artists has become an asset to the city, Johnson said.
Its owner, Mike Klove, owns several other music venues, including the New York City club The New American Room, which opened in February.
After the band T.I. played Austin’s The Marquis last year, Johnson and Klove were asked to run a second show at the venue, which is located in a renovated industrial building in the former home of the Texas Steel Co.
In addition to being the owner of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Klove also owns the Austin Convention Center, which hosted a string of major music festivals in the last year.
